I got a chance to see Ava DuVernay’s Selma, a few months ago and was blown away. (You know you done something right if you get the seal of approval from my Grandma J, which Selma got.) The costume designer snapped on this film, and it was fascinating to see how seriously Civil Rights leaders and marchers of the time took their appearance. Definitely brings up questions around the politics of respectability (Should we need to look fly to be treated human? Definitely not.) Still, the beauty of black hair & fashion in this era is undeniable. Jasmine Durhal (dope Detroit-bred photographer based in Chi) teamed up with stylist Tiffany McPherson and BlackGirlFly Magazine to do an editorial exploring the fashion of the 60’s.
